AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Graduating seniors at Amherst County High School will not only be able to to enjoy an in-person graduation on May 28, but thanks to the school’s partnership with Liberty University, each graduate will be able to invite up to 10 guests to watch the ceremony in Williams Stadium.
According to the high school’s announcement on Thursday, April 15, limitations on indoor graduations and outdoor venues caused school officials to rule out locations such as the Vines Center or Lancer Stadium.
As a result, the school decided to host graduation in Williams Stadium, which means the ceremony will be moved up to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 28.

We are thrilled to announce that we have solidified the location for our 2021 Graduation Ceremony. Through our partnership with Liberty University, we will be able to host our Graduation on Friday, May 28, 2021, at 7:00 PM in Williams Stadium. Due to the 500 person limit on indoor graduations, the Vines Center and all other indoor venues are not an option for our commencement ceremony this year. In addition, Lancer Stadium is not large enough to accommodate all our graduates and guests.
In Lancer Stadium, at 30% capacity per Governor’s Order 72, we would only be able to allow one guest per graduate. In order to host graduation in Williams Stadium, we need to have graduation earlier than previously announced. However, by holding graduation on May 28, 2021, we will be able to allow each graduate to invite at least 10 guests. We confirmed this date with Liberty University today and wanted to get this information out as soon as possible. The change in the graduation date does not affect the last day of school for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The last day for underclassmen will still be June 10th, but seniors will be finished on May 28th after graduation (Senior athletes will still be able to participate and finish their sports season after graduation).
All graduation announcements that were purchased through Jostens will be printed with the correct graduation date, time, and location. Cap and Gowns can be picked up during lunch on May 5th for A-day students and May 6th for B-day students. We will send information about when ARA students can pick up their cap and gown early next week. We will have a graduation rehearsal on May 28, 2021, at 10:00 in Williams Stadium. Over the next few weeks, we will send more information about the graduation details as well as implications for seniors regarding the new date. As with anything during a pandemic, plans are subject to change, but we promise to make changes only when they are absolutely necessary. We will also communicate any changes as soon as possible.
Thank you all for being so flexible and patient throughout this process. We are dedicated to ensuring our seniors have a memorable graduation experience that can be shared with family and friends.
