AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Central Virginia first responders had a busy day battling the blazes on Tuesday after an early morning fire caused an Amherst County barn to collapse.

Big Island Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. says Company 2 was dispatched to a structure fire on Waughs Ferry Crossing shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

When crews arrived, they found members of the Monelison Fire Department trying to access a burning barn full of hay. The fire company says the structure had already collapsed.

Because of the wet conditions and the location of the fire, Big Island fire officials say it was almost impossible to access the area with the trucks, adding that one unit actually got stuck in the mud.

According to the fire company, the Forestry Department was called to help contain the fire using the forestry dozer.

Even though units cleared the first call around 9 a.m., Company 2 reportedly received a second call just before 12:45 p.m. to bring brush trucks to assist the Forestry Department with fire containment because of the high winds.

All units managed to safely clear the scene Tuesday afternoon, fire officials say.
