ALTAVISTA, Va. (WFXR) — A war over gas prices is going on in Campbell County right now, which is helping to drive the costs at the pump down to levels not seen since last year.

Drivers stopping by the GB gas station in Altavista were filling up for less than $3 a gallon on Thursday, July 21, which is significantly lower than Virginia’s $4.22 per gallon average for regular gas reported by AAA that day.

Although many in Altavista community know GB stations tend to have low gas prices, the real push for this price drop was a competing station located only seconds away.

An Exxon station right down the street was offering gas at $2.99 per gallon, which prompted GB to begin selling their own at only $2.83 per gallon.

The fuel manager at the Altavista GB gas station, Andy Gill, says they strive to always offer the lowest price, adding that they are prepared to drop even lower if needed.

“It’s our business model. Whatever city, whatever county we operate in, we’re going to be 5 to 10 cents cheaper than anybody else,” Gill explained.

Meanwhile, this competition between the Campbell County gas stations has allowed customers more peace of mind when filling their tanks.

Even though there were long lines of cars wrapping around the parking lot on Thursday, WFXR News spoke to some of the drivers, who say these prices could have a very positive impact on community members.

“Oh this is great because not only do people get to get the cheap prices, but they get to get to the places they need a lot easier,” said GB customer Matthew Pennall.

The Altavista station is reportedly able to provide gas at such low prices by balancing the costs between multiple other locations.

According to Gill, the GB station will continue to do what it needs to in order to have lower prices, adding that his main goal is to support those in the Altavista community.

“It’s in our DNA, we give back to the community, we invest in every community we go in, it doesn’t matter,” Gill told WFXR News. “Altavista, we’ve been here for some years, we’ve always invested back, and we will continue to invest back in the community.”

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $4.19 in Virginia and $3.87 in Campbell County as of Friday, July 22.
