Two local schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Green Valley Elementary School in Roanoke County and Tunstall High School in Pittsylvania County have been awarded the honor, according to officials.
School administrators say the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program judges qualifying schools in areas like core curriculum and parental involvement.
Green Valley Elementary’s principal says making learning fun helped her school earn the honor.
“We have a really good time with our students,” said Ashley McCallum, principal of Green Valley Elementary School. “When we’re learning, we use all different types of modalities, different strategies. We get to know our kids first and foremost. It’s about relationship-building.”
A total of seven schools in Virginia have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools this year. Officials say 329 schools were granted the honor this year nationwide.
