Local group hopes to show teens how to make the right decisions

Tom Gerdy says he wanted to do something to make a difference in the lives of at risk children.

He contacted an inmate who was getting out of jail and before he left asked him to collect letters from his peers in jail about what they would do differently if given the opportunity.

The book covers inmates who have different prison sentences from assault and battery and a year in prison, to dealing drugs and up to 40 years, to capital murder and life in prison.

Tom says the letters are written by inmates from all walks of life, which he hopes can relate to all kids so that they don’t end up in the juvenile detention system.

“We collected from four different prisons and told them this was totally anonymous. It wasn’t scared straight, that doesn’t seem to work. You can’t out tough a tough kid, but we just asked them to reach out to kids and talk about how in one second one bad decision can change their lives,” said Tom Gerdy, Insights from Inside.
