Local baby diagnosed with Botulism, family asks for prayers

Local News

A baby is fighting for his life after he was diagnosed with a rare and potentially deadly illness.

His mother, Jessica Hunter, has stayed by his side day and night

Baby Nickolas’ mother says he was a happy perfect little baby until one day she noticed he wasn’t acting normal.

The sound of machines, a little cough, and those baby blue eyes are precious to Jessica Hunter.

“He’s fought through this whole ordeal, and he’s still coming out strong,” said Jessica Hunter, Nickolas’ Mother.

Almost two weeks ago, Jessica knew something was wrong.

“He started refusing his bottles, he would suck once or twice, and then his mouth would just fall open. So I knew something wasn’t right because that’s not him. He’s a chunky boy, he loves his food,” said Jessica Hunter, Nickolas’ Mother.

After a doctor’s visit, Nickolas was taken straight to the hospital.

He was diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness.

“You never think in a million years that he’d get botulism,” said Jessica Hunter, Nickolas’ Mother.

According to doctors at Carilion, botulism is rare, especially in infants. According to the CDC, there were only 150 cases reported in the U.S. back in in 2016.

But that was only the beginning for little Nickolas.

“He’s went through pneumonia. He’s still getting antibiotics for that and now he has a collapsed lung,” said Jessica Hunter, Nickolas’ Mother.

Jessica says she stays at the hospital 24/7.

“You just never know what is going to happen. You know the next, never expected him to get pneumonia, certainly didn’t expect him to have a collapsed lung, so I feel like if I leave, something is going to happen.  I don’t want to leave him,” said Jessica Hunter, Nickolas’ Mother.

As a mother, she says it’s hard not being able to hold her baby.

“Taking it day by day.” “Yeah,” said Jessica Hunter, Nickolas’ Mother.

Knowing one day, hopefully, soon she will be able to leave behind the wires and machines and hold her baby once again.

Right now the family says they are asking for prayers from the community to help their little boy make it through this tough time.
