Man dies from injuries received in officer involved shooting in Botetourt County

UPDATE 8:21 P.M.: The man wounded in an officer involved shooting and manhunt Friday has died, according to a release from Virginia State Police.

Police say his body has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for examination, autopsy and positive identification.

State Police will release the name once next of kin is notified.

UPDATE 3:49 P.M.: WFXR’s Parker King said the sheriff’s office is still not releasing information on how the suspect sustained injuries.

UPDATE 3:24 P.M.: The suspect involved in today’s shootout and manhunt with Botetourt County sheriff’s deputies is in custody and being treated for injuries received during a confrontation with authorities. The nature of his injuries are unknown and it is unknown to which hospital he will be transported.

Deputies say were called out at 10:12 a.m., the sheriff’s office said. The deputy involved in the shootout with the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.

Virginia State Police has taken the lead on the investigation.

Deputies have reason to believe the man may have been mentally ill.

UPDATE 1:22 P.M.: Botetourt County Sheriff Matt Ward said no deputies are injured but it is unknown if the suspect was hit during the exchange of gunfire. Ambulances are on standby near the scene.

UPDATE 1:03 P.M.: Botetourt County Sheriff Matt Ward says deputies were involved in an exchange of gunfire with a male suspect. No sheriff’s deputies were injured, but Ward said it is unclear if the suspect was injured.

Deputies are searching for the suspect in the national forest in the Arcadia area of Botetourt County which Ward described as remote.

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office has blocked a road near Arcadia Baptist Church in the county.

A blockade is in place at Arcadia and Chapel Roads in Botetourt County. The sheriff’s office has not answered requests for comment on law enforcement activity in the area.
