Inmates helping animal shelter

Local News

There is a new pilot program giving inmates the chance to learn job skills as they in turn help the community.

The Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the regional center for animal control and protection.
Under the watchful eye of a deputy, minimum security risk inmates will clean the shelter in the mornings.
These inmates have no convictions of abuse towards animals or crimes against persons.
They have been vetted through a process by the sheriff’s office.
