DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia State Police are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday morning.

Danville police said around 4:45 a.m. on Nov. 19, officers at the Danville Adult Detention Center found 45-year-old Scott McCoy unresponsive in his cell. This prompted officers to begin life-saving measures.

McCoy was then taken to the Sovah Health where he was pronounced dead.

The Danville Police Department (DPD) Interim Chief has requested for the Virginia State Police to conduct an independent investigation.

Danville Police tell WFXR News that no foul play was suspected in McCoy’s death; however, his cause of death will be determined during the investigation.

DPD says a review of the incident will also be conducted by the Virginia Department of Corrections.
