How to fend off a porch pirate

Local News

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — So-called porch pirates are striking across the nation, as well as close to home.

According to the Roanoke County Police Department, about 36 percent of Americans have had a package stolen from their own front door.

In an effort to help people avoid having their packages stolen, the department put a video on its Facebook page with some practical advice.

First and foremost, tell your delivery company to put your packages in a place where they can’t be seen from the road.

“You can help them out by giving them better places to put that. Maybe leave a note on your door. Put it on the back door, back porch. More and more companies are offering little drop boxes that you can put and chain to your house. Put a brick in it — something to make it harder to get to,” advised Officer Greg Benton of the Roanoke County Police Department.

Benton says if crooks find it easy to steal one package from your porch, they’re 45 percent more likely to come back and try it again.
