Rain quickly changed to a heavy wet snow before the sun came up Monday morning in the New River Valley.
In Montgomery County, I-81 was one of the first roads to show problems, but VDOT plow trucks were quick to throw down salt to help melt the snow.
Those who weren’t working around the clock woke up to several inches of snow already on the ground in Blacksburg.
“Shoveling this stuff,” said Winston Smith.
Smith was working hard to keep sidewalks clean, but the snow was coming down so heavily at times even this usually simple task was challenging.
“I have to keep going over it,” said Smith.
Young Ryan Stone and his dad chose play over work.
“It’s really cool,” said Stone about the snow.
Of course the only thing that can top a snowball fight is a great sledding hill.
“Ok, this is going to be cool. I don’t know how cool, but I know it’s going to be fun,” Stone said.
Unofficial snowfall totals across the NRV are ranging between 3-6″ so far.
