The 2019 growing season officially begins today for portions of the Commonwealth
The National Weather Service announced that the Growing Season begins today, April 11th, for the Roanoke Valley, the southern Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmonts of Virginia and North Carolina. Frost and Freeze products will be issued as needed for those regions. The tender vegetation has developed enough and the temperatures are consistently mild enough that a sudden change to colder conditions will do damage to the budding plants. Frost advisories along with Freeze watches and warnings will be issued for those regions mentioned above to help folks cover and protect vegetation from the chill of early spring.
Higher elevated locations will be addressed in a few weeks.
