Governor Ralph Northam has a small, but powerful response to the abortion ban striking several states.

In a tweet, the Governor cited an article by Think Progress saying he would have his veto pen ready for any version of an abortion bill that made it to his desk.

Think Progress refers to Delegate Bob Thomas’s Facebook page, which contains a video interview where he pledges to ban abortion if Republicans take over the Governor’s Mansion in 2020.

In a radio interview attached, Delegate Thomas clarifies his position as supporting a partial ban on abortion similar to Georgia’s “Fetal Heartbeat Bill” which includes some exceptions, including if the pregnancy risks the life or poses substantial and irreversible physical harm to the pregnant woman.

On Wednesday, Alabama governor signed an abortion law that would offer life in prison to abortion providers.

If the bill can overcome legal challenges, it may overthrow Roe v. Wade, therefore criminalizing abortion nationwide and becoming the nation’s strongest abortion bill.

Several other states have joined the abortion bill movement, including Georgia, Ohio and Missouri.
