Fuel tanker crash snarles traffic on Route 40 near Gretna

Local News

GRETNA, Va. (WFXR) – Crews have spent much of the day, and evening, working to clean up a fuel tanker tractor-trailer that tipped on its side, partially blocking the roadway with an active fuel leak.

Gretna Fire and Rescue was dispatched to reports of a crash, with injuries, in the 300 block of East Gretna Road at 10:42 a.m. Wednesday.

Due to the active fuel leak associated with the crash, assistance was requested from the Regional Hazmat Team from the Danville Fire Department.

As of 9 p.m., cleanup was still going on and the road was still closed as fuel was being transferred into a separate fuel tanker.

VDOT has a detour in place as the road is still expected to be shut down for several more hours.

The Virginia State Police is investigating the crash.
