The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission (TRRC) has awarded $650,000 to Franklin County in state funding from the Commission’s Last Mile Broadband program.
The grant will assist with the installation of about 30 miles of new fiber within the county.
The Franklin County Broadband Authority will partner with Shentel, a telecommunication company, to provide last mile fiber to various unserved and underserved residential areas within the county. There fiber extensions are expected to make broadband service available to approximately 460 home.
Following a broadband needs report from Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology. Franklin County established a Broadband Authority to address internet service needs.
The fiber extensions are expected to begin late 2019.
