ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – With a line outside of the door. The 4th annual Holiday Giveback was in full swing. For organizer Antonio Hash giving back is what the holiday season is all about.
“When you see families come in here they work all year long to get the things that they need but can’t make ends meet so what we’re able to provide this assistance to them again with all of our community partners coming together we’re grateful in our hearts and thankful as well.”
Parents in the area like Dina Johnson are especially thankful.
” I’m currently homeless and I started work Monday coming out of homelessness there wouldn’t have been a Christmas without this organization and I don’t think people realize around the holidays you just need to be uplifted and they did that for me and my family,” says Johnson.
Folks in need could pick up clothes and toys for their families. Which was all provided by local groups within the Roanoke area. For Hash seeing people benefit from the community holds a special place in his heart.
“I can remember my mom standing in the Salvation Army line before the holidays to make sure that her three kids had for the holiday. So it made me tear up in the inside knowing that we’re helping another family in need,” explains Hash.
For Dina Johnson, she’s just happy her children get to have a great holiday season.
“It mean’t everything to them we were displaced and this Christmas came early/It’s really uplifting their happy and it took a strain off of me just mentally and emotionally for them to be here it’s not like you’re just giving items you’re giving hope,” states Johnson.
Hash is already gearing up for next years 2020 holiday giveback.
