Four people within the Roanoke Police Department were promoted to leadership positions during a ceremony on Friday.

The promotion of Tim Jones to Chief of Police left a deputy chief opening, which went to Samuel Roman.

Also promoted Friday were Chester Smith to captain, Jamey Bowdel to lieutenant and Britton Corker to sergeant.

Police officers say making these promotions at the same time is special for the department.

“Obviously it’s very special for them because they’re being recognized for their hard work within the department and within the community,” said Monti Lee, deputy chief of investigative support for the Roanoke Police Department. “And it’s a special day for us because it’s not very often that you get to promote four people in sequential order like that within an agency.”

Each of the officers promoted has served several years with the Roanoke Police Department, according to officials.
