The attack on the congressional baseball practice hits close to home for current and former members of Congress.
The baseball game the Republican lawmakers were practicing for has been a tradition for more than 100 years. It brings people from both sides of the aisle together for a good cause.
Police tape surrounds the baseball field in Alexandria where not long ago, members of Congress bonded at practices. It’s a field well known to former Congressman Virgil Goode.
“We practiced on the field then right where the shooting occurred,” Goode said.
Goode played on the Republicans’ congressional baseball team when he was in the House of Representatives. That’s how he got to know Rep. Steve Scalise, who was one of the people shot on the field.
“He was good to work with, and it was fun to interact with him on the baseball team,” Goode said.
The annual Congressional Baseball Game is a benefit for several charities, Goode said. It has been a way for members of Congress get together outside Capitol Hill.
“It was fun and a way to meet other congressmen, interact with them, both parties,” he said. “And it was for a good cause.”
Goode said he expects a review of security protocol for members of Congress but added it may not be practical for Capitol Police to be with every member.
“It would be a massive undertaking to have a Capitol policeman go around with every member of Congress,” Goode said. “I don’t know what they’ll do. Those there will have to decide what can be done.”
For now, Goode said he is hoping to see Scalise back on the baseball field in the future.
“It is a good way for the Republicans and Democrats to get together in a fun, less stressful environment than a hard committee meeting,” Goode said.
