First Martinsville Pride celebration to be held June 15

Local News

The Shindig Uptown Bistro and Catering is filled with rainbow decorations.

The restaurant will be hosting a LGBTQ+ pride celebration in Downtown Martinsville on Saturday, June 15. This is considered the first pride celebration in the city.

“Peace, love, and happiness, because that’s what this is about,” said General Manager Lawrence Vanderwoods.

The event is all about diversity and bringing people together. While there have been some negative comments on social media, Vanderwood isn’t worrying. He says the celebration will be safe and fun.

The event will start at noon on Saturday on Main Street. There will be many festivities going on including a henna tattoo artist, a balloon artist, music, and food.

“We want this to be a positive experience,” he said. “You’re not going to walk in here and we’re going to say be gay, that’s the way, because that’s not what this is about. It’s just about letting people be aware that we are gay and our life is really not that much different than what yours is,”
