First African American female Danville police officer dies at age 77

Danville’s first African American female police officer, Mildred “Millie” Corbett Burnett, has died at the age of 77. 

According to her obituary, Burnett passed away on Saturday, December 29. 

She was born in 1941 in Caswell County, North Carolina. She is best known as being the first African American woman to serve on the Danville Police Department force. 

She had five grandchildren, one great-grandson, and one daughter. 

Her funeral services were held January 3 at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home.
