VINTON, Va. (WFXR) — Governor Northam announced a statewide ban of events with more than 100 people and encouraged people to avoid going out to gathering places. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that no gatherings with 50 people or more take place for the next two months. These are all measures recommended to prevent the continuous spread of the coronavirus.
Such recommendations are leaving business owners with big decisions. Decisions that impact the community and economy.
General Manager of Firehouse Skate N’ Play in Vinton, Mason Drew, says their business wants to help the community out.
There’s a lot of parents that are in a bind right now with no childcare. If they don’t have childcare, they’re having to take off work. Many with unpaid days and this is a great alternative for them.Mason Drew, GM, Firehouse Skate N’ Play
The skating and game center will be open for partial days, offering internet access for kids that need to do take home school work, free lunch packages on specific days, and taking extra precautions given the pandemic.
We are limiting how many people we have in our building to the standard of 100 or less. We are doing extra sanitizing of our hard services outside of our daily cleaning procedures.Mason Drew, GM, Firehouse Skate N’ Play
Every hour, on the hour, the business is enforcing sanitary procedures for its employees, facility, and patrons.
Natasha Campbell, a nurse, and mother says after staying in the house all weekend her girls needed a day out.
I feel like it’s important to be able to get the kids out and get some of their energy out. I called, they bumped up their sanitation practices here. They have sanitation station in place and I fell like why not come out and let the kids be kids.Natasha Campbell, Mother
Drew says the business is doing everything they can to stop the spread within the facility and plan to stay open for the community.
Until we may expect that we do have to close down for sure, and we are prepared for that, but until then we are going to keep on rolling.Mason Drew, GM, Firehouse Skate N’ Play
