About a dozen students were honored Wednesday night for their entries in the annual Roanoke Fire and EMS Fire Prevention Week art contest.
Officials also recognized two children who helped evacuate others from a house fire.
Students who participated said they believe the contest helps raise awareness about fire prevention methods.
“When I did the poster, my family asked me about it, and then they became more aware about the situation, so they actually replaced their batteries” in their smoke detectors, said Gracie Kahoun, a middle school student who was one of the contest winners.
This was the 12th year for the contest, according to organizers.
