SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. (WFXR) — Crews spent part of Saturday afternoon extinguishing a fire on a boat just off of a marina on Smith Mountain Lake.

Scruggs Volunteer Fire and Rescue says units from multiple departments were dispatched at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 13 for a reported boat fire at Indian Point Marina with several people in the water.

According to the Franklin County Department of Public Safety, six passengers were forced to jump overboard to safety.

Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue says the four adults and two children aboard the boat made it to shore safely.

All six patients were either not injured at all or sustained minor injuries, according to Scruggs fire officials.

The boat reportedly went up in flames quickly because of fuel on board and was moved away from other docks to prevent any further damage, but the boat eventually sunk while the flames were being put out.

Meanwhile, Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue says a Fireboat and the marina suffered minor damages from the fire.
