FLOYD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — This Thursday was unlike any other day at Farmer’s Supply.
“It’s been a phenomenal day,” said Janice Yearout-Patton, manager at Farmer’s Supply.
Customers lined up bright and early on Thursday, Oct. 1, for the store’s first day of its going-out-of-business sale. The frequent in and out of customers, has kept staff members busy.
“We didn’t have a clue who we were waiting on. We were just ringing just as hard as we could go,” said Yearout-Patton.
The Floyd County landmark recently announced it was shutting its door for good. The store has been operating since the 1930s.
Yearout-Patton’s father was manager of the store back then. She says she still remembers when residents graciously helped her around the store when share started working there in the 1970s.
“They taught me. They were just kind and patient, especially a lot of the men. They would explain plumbing parts to me, they would explain to me how it worked,” Yearout-Patton said.
The decision to close was a shock to many residents.
“I hate to hear it. They’ve always been a great service to the community, to the local people,” said Lois Via.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, and the hardships of finding needed products, the announcement to close was evident, but not easy.
“We’ve gone back and forth for two years and really agonized over this,” Yearout-Patton said, “it’s one of the hardest things I ever had to do.”
Ethelene Duncan has been going to the store for over fifty years. While she’s sad to see the store close, she hopes it’s replaced with something soon.
“A town with closed stores is not very good,” said Duncan.
Residents have already began picking up momentos and saying their goodbyes to staff members- at a store that’s beloved by many.
“I guess I’d have to say – it’s just hard. Thank you for the memories. As Mr. Lawson said, it’s been a good run,” Yearout-Patton said.
The store’s going-out-of-business sale will run until the end of November.
