DNA bill passed to help save lives

Local News

The general assembly wrapped up session on Saturday, lawmakers voted on a bill that would make those convicted of certain misdemeanor crimes have to submit their DNA to the Virginia DNA databank.

This will help solve crimes, it’s something Gil Harrington is very passionate about since it could have prevented the death of her daughter.

Morgan Harrington was abducted and murdered by Jesse Mathew, if this bill had been in affect at the time his DNA would have been in the database, because he had committed several misdemeanors before becoming a murderer.

Wisconsin and New York have passed similar legislation, a report from the sheriff office in Albemarle sites 89 percent of New York’s sexual assault offenders were already in the database for non-sex crimes.

The misdemeanor offenses being added to the database include crimes in assault, petit larceny, trespassing and destruction of property.
