LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Even though summer is coming to an end, high heat continues to impact many across the region.

On Friday, Aug. 25, temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s and the heat index will hit the triple digits. In efforts to keep residents across the Hill City cool, the City of Lynchburg has announced that cooling centers will be open at the following locations:

The city is encouraging all residents to take precautions during the extreme heat. Here are a few tips:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Keep cool indoors
  • Dress appropriately for hot weather
  • Limit physical activity
  • Do not keep children or pets in cars
  • Check on your neighbors – especially the elderly
  • Keep animals cool and make sure they have fresh, cold water and protection from the heat and sun
