(WFXR) — TikTok recently announced plans to make changes to the app in order to create a safer experience for younger users.
These changes are part of an attempt to provide additional guidance on the appropriateness of TikTok’s content for users under the age of 13. However, some people are still concerned about the app and its content.
Ryan Klingensmith is the founder of Shape the Sky, a group that wants to make kids responsible by teaching parents and other adults how to be tech savvy.
According to Klingensmith, he is concerned about the ages of some children using TikTok, adding that they could still find inappropriate content on the app.
“If the student logs in at their appropriate age and uses it within the guidelines of how it’s supposed to be used, then it might be helpful,” said Klingensmith. “However, again, it’s easy to lie about your age and sign in as an 18-year-old to avoid those restrictions. You know, it’s the cat and mouse thing. As soon as TikTok adjusts their age restrictions, people are just going to log in at a different age to avoid that. I mean, it’s pretty simple to get around.”
If your child is interested in downloading an app like TikTok or Snapchat, Klingensmith recommends you establish an account first and use it for a few weeks to see what the online culture is like before you approve anything.
