Closures, delays, virtual learning days continue across southwest, central Virginia on Friday

(WFXR) — With the potential for icy roadways across southwest and central Virginia ahead of Friday morning’s commute, a number of schools and government facilities have canceled, delayed, or moved their operations online for the day.

Check out a list of the schools and facilities that have announced closures or modified operations as of 9:52 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 19:

Alleghany County

Alleghany County Public Schools will be closed on Friday because of the inclement weather. Even though there will not be any virtual instruction for the day, 12-month employees are asked to report to work at 10 a.m.

Amherst County

Amherst County Public Schools will hold an at-home work day for all faculty and staff on Friday while students will continue with their regular remote learning assignments for Fridays.

All Blue Ridge Medical Center locations will open at 10 a.m. on Friday. If you have an appointment scheduled before 10 a.m., staff will call you to reschedule.

Both locations of the Amherst County Public Library will be closed on Friday because of power outages and inclement weather.

The administrative offices for Amherst County and the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday.

The Amherst County Health Department will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, according to the Central Virginia Health District.

Appomattox County

Appomattox County Public Schools will be closed (Employee Code 2, report at 10 a.m.) on Friday, but this will still be a virtual learning day. Students should complete their assignments from their teachers or their emergency learning packets.

The Appomattox County Health Department will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, according to the Central Virginia Health District.

Bedford County

Bedford County Public Schools will be closed (Employee Code 1, no employees report) on Friday. Therefore, hybrid, in-person, and remote students are not required to do school work.

The Bedford General District Court, District Courts, and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, but the Circuit Court will not open until 11 a.m.

The Town of Bedford offices will delay opening until 10 a.m. on Friday, but on-call employees and essential staff should report as scheduled.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office will open at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

Bland County

Bland County Public Schools will be closed on Friday for a snow day.

Botetourt County

Botetourt County Public Schools will be closed (Code 3) on Friday.

Buena Vista

Buena Vista City Public Schools will be closed (Employee Code 1) on Friday, which means both in-person and online classes are canceled.
However, meals may be picked up at Enderly Heights Elementary School from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 22.

Campbell County

Campbell County Public Schools will be closed on Friday.

Campbell County administrative offices and the Campbell County Public Library System will open on a delayed schedule at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, but vital emergency services will remain on their regular schedules.

The Campbell County Health Department will open at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the Central Virginia Health District.

Carroll County

Carroll County Public Schools will be closed (Employee Code 2) for in-person learning on Friday, but this will still be a virtual learning day.

Covington

Covington City Public Schools will be closed on Friday.

Craig County

Craig County Public Schools will be closed (Employee Code 2) on Friday. This is not a virtual learning day, so school officials say meal pickup will not be available.

Danville

Danville Public Schools will be closed for both virtual and face-to-face instruction of Friday. However, 11-month and 12-month employees are asked to report at 10 a.m.

The Danville Sheriff’s Office says Danville Juvenile/Domestic Relations Court and the JDCT Clerk’s Office will open at 1 p.m. on Friday, but the Danville Courthouse, as well as all other courts and their respective clerk’s offices will open on their normal schedule.

Averett University will operate on a two-hour delay on Friday, with offices opening and classes starting at 10 a.m.

Danville Community College will be closed on Friday, as well as any remote operations.

Westover Christian Academy will be closed on Friday.

Floyd County

Floyd County Public Schools were already scheduled to be closed on Friday and then stay closed through Monday, Feb. 22 because of mid-winter break.

The Floyd County Health Department is set to open at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the New River Health District.

Franklin County

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says the Franklin County Courthouse will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday, so it will operate on a delayed schedule. Both the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and the Circuit Court will start at 10 a.m., but the General District Court will be closed for the day.

The West Piedmont Health District says all health departments — including the Franklin County Health Department — will open at 10 a.m. on Friday because of the dangerous driving conditions.

Galax

Galax City Public Schools will not hold in-person classes or offer meal delivery on Friday, but all students will still have a virtual learning day.

Giles County

The Giles County Health Department is set to open at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the New River Health District.

Grayson County

Grayson County administrative offices will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday.

Henry County

The Henry-Martinsville Department of Social Services will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

The Martinsville-Henry County Visitor Center will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

According to the 21st District Court Service Unit, the Henry County CSU office and courthouse will open at 9 a.m. on Friday.

The West Piedmont Health District says all health departments — including the Henry/Martinsville Health Department — will open at 10 a.m. on Friday because of the dangerous driving conditions.

Highland County

Highland County Public Schools will hold a virtual learning day on Friday.

Lexington

Lexington City Schools will proceed with an at-home learning day for all students on Friday. However, school offices will open at 10 a.m.

Lynchburg

Lynchburg City Schools will be closed to all students and staff and will not offer meal delivery or curbside meal service on Friday because of the potentially hazardous road conditions. In addition, teachers will not log into SeeSaw or Google Classroom and will not take student attendance.

The Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office is set to open at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, the Lynchburg General District Court, the Lynchburg Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, the Lynchburg Circuit Court, the Lynchburg Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, and the Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office are set to open at 10 a.m.

Liberty University and Liberty Christian Academy will be closed on Friday, but the Early Learning Center will be on a two-hour delay — with no early rooms — starting at 10 a.m.

Randolph College will hold all classes virtually on Friday. While staff who are able to work remotely should do so, essential personnel who work on campus should contact their supervisor. In addition, in-person activities are set to resume at 5 p.m.

Martinsville

Martinsville City Public Schools will proceed with a regular virtual learning day on Friday.

Patrick Henry Community College will be closed on Friday.

The Henry-Martinsville Department of Social Services will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Carlisle School will be closed on Friday because of the potentially hazardous travel conditions.

The Martinsville-Henry County Visitor Center will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

According to the 21st District Court Service Unit, the Martinsville CSU office and courthouse will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

The West Piedmont Health District says all health departments — including the Henry/Martinsville Health Department — will open at 10 a.m. on Friday because of the dangerous driving conditions.

Montgomery County

Montgomery County Public Schools will hold an inclement weather day (Modified Employee Code C) on Friday, which means buildings will be closed to students, meals will not be available at school sites, and employees should work from home for the day.

Virginia Tech‘s Blacksburg campus and the Schiffert Health Center will not open until 9 a.m. on Friday.
In addition, the ArcPoint coronavirus testing clinic at Lane Stadium will now start at 9 a.m., but any testing appointments prior to that time will have to be rescheduled for next week.
However, Blacksburg Transit will run on their regular schedules for the day.

St. John Neumann Academy will be closed on Friday.

Bridges and Blossoms Preschool will operate on a one-hour delay on Friday.

The Town of Blacksburg administrative offices will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, but the Blacksburg Aquatic Center will open at 5:30 a.m. and the Community Center will open at 6 a.m.

In addition, Blacksburg Parks and Recreation has canceled the 8:30 a.m. aerobics class, the 9:30 a.m. Zumba class, and the 10:30 a.m. Healthy Backs class for Friday.

The Montgomery County General District Court will stay closed on Friday — and all cases will be rescheduled — because of the weather conditions and power outages.

The New River Health District’s coronavirus vaccination clinic will now be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, so appointments will be pushed back by three hours.
In addition, the Montgomery County Health Department is set to open at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the New River Health District.
The New River Health District’s COVID-19 Call Center will also be open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. If you have any virus-related questions, call (540)267-8240.

The garbage and recycling in Christiansburg from Thursday, Feb. 18 will be collected on Friday, as well as Friday’s regular collection.

Nelson County

All Blue Ridge Medical Center locations will open at 10 a.m. on Friday. If you have an appointment scheduled before 10 a.m., staff will call you to reschedule.

Pittsylvania County

Pittsylvania County Public Schools will be closed (Employee Plan D) will be closed on Friday.

Pittsylvania County government offices and departments, as well as the Pittsylvania County Courthouse, will operate on a two-hour delay on Friday because of the potential for freezing rain.

Faith Christian Academy will be closed on Friday.

Pulaski County

Pulaski County administrative offices will open on a delayed schedule on Friday, will offices opening at 10 a.m.

The Pulaski County Health Department is set to open at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the New River Health District.

Radford

Radford City Schools will hold a remote learning day on Friday.

Radford University‘s main campus, Radford University Carilion in Roanoke, and Radford University’s activities at the Roanoke Higher Education Center and the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon will operate on a one-hour delay, opening at 9 a.m. on Friday.
While classes scheduled at 8 a.m. will not meet on Friday, classes scheduled for 9 a.m. and later will meet at their regular times.
Essential employees are asked to contact their supervisors with any questions about their work schedules.

The Radford City Health Department is set to open at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the New River Health District.

Roanoke City

Roanoke City Public Schools will hold an on-demand, asynchronous learning day on Friday. In addition, Roanoke Valley Governor’s School will operate remotely for the day.
However, CogAT testing has been canceled for Friday.

Roanoke Catholic School will operate on a two-hour delay on Friday, with classes starting at 10 a.m.

Risk Management Systems, a Roanoke business, will delay operations by one hour on Friday.

The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts postponed the vaccination clinic from Thursday, Feb. 18 at the Berglund Center until Friday. If you had an appointment for Thursday’s clinic, you are asked to arrive at the Berglund Center on Friday one hour later than your original appointment time.

The parish office at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday.

Roanoke County

Roanoke County Public Schools will be closed on Friday because of continued wintry conditions.

Roanoke County offices and facilities — including recreation facilities — will open at 10 a.m. on Friday. However, CORTRAN services are canceled for the day.

Virginia Western Community College will be closed for day classes on Friday.

North Cross School will delay Friday’s operations by two hours.

The Vinton Treasurer’s Office drive-up window at the Vinton Municipal Building will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday.

The Lancerlot Sports Complex will open at 8 a.m. on Friday because of potentially icy road conditions.

Rockbridge County

Rockbridge County Public Schools will be closed Friday, but 12-month employees should report by 10 a.m. if travel conditions are safe enough.

The Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office says the Rockbridge County Courthouse will not open until 10 a.m. on Friday.

The Rockbridge County staffed solid waste collection centers will open at 9 a.m. on Friday, but the county administration offices and the Rockbridge Area Health Center will not open until 10 a.m.

All branches of the Rockbridge YMCA will open at 9 a.m. on Friday, with all-day childcare starting at 9 a.m. at branches and off-site locations.

Rockbridge Christian Academy will be closed on Friday.

Salem

Salem City Schools will be operating on a one-hour delay on Friday.

Wythe County

Wythe County Public Schools will be closed (Employee Code 3) on Friday.

Wytheville Community College will operate on a two-hour delay on Friday, but online classes will continue on their regular schedule.

Wythe County officials say the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) vaccination event scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 18 at the Wytheville Meeting Center has been postponed until Friday from noon to 6 p.m.
