Throughout the tournament Charlottesville has been a hotbed for anything basketball related, and businesses like Mincer’s on University Avenue have been bombarded with people. This comes after the University of Virginia men’s basketball team beat Auburn to advance to the championship round.
“It’s hard to move around with so many people in here ever since the buzzer. Last night eventually we had to go home so we could be here in the morning so we had to lock up been it’s been so awesome seeing everybody so excited to get all the gear,” says Vice President of Mincer’s, Cal Mincer.
The business has been around for 71 years, and according to Cal Mincer the influx in people began towards the middle of the Cavaliers tournament run.
“Ever since we beat Purdue it’s been nonstop all this week people have been loading up on final four stuff. We open the doors Sunday morning with t-shirts to sell and they’ve been moving out the door ever since then,” explains Mincer.
People Like UVA alum Beth Tilney have decended upon the Charlottesville to get their hands on some merchandise. But for Tilney witnessing her team advance to the finals has been a dream come true.
“We have been waiting a lifetime for this, my husband and I both went to college here met, married, and fell in love and finally, our last baby is here so we came up for the weekend to see him and then all of a sudden we’re in the final four and now we’re going to Minneapolis today my whole family my who family is flying in from everywhere to go,” says Tilney.
This is the first time in the schools history the team has made it to the championship round, and according to Tilney, the teams run has helped the city of Charlottesville.
“I think some things have been happening here over the past couple of years that have not been so great for our school and our town and this is bringing everybody together. Everybody is psyched, everybody everywhere is talking about it and Monday night I have a feeling it’s going to be a great night or a terrible night but it’s a great night no matter what because we’re there,” explains Tilney.
But in the end many people are just excited that the Cavaliers have made it to the final round.
“Last year it was tough walking around last year just looking at all these UVA shirts and looking at them all day and realizing that the season is over when we thought last year might’ve been the year to still be playing is awesome it’s so fun,” states Mincer.
