Officials in Wythe County say Carter’s Park is closed after a tractor trailer carrying diesel fuel was involved in a vehicle collision on I-81/I-77 Friday.
The trailer leaked a couple thousand gallons of fuel into the drainage system from the interstate. The drainage system is released directly into Reed Creek.
Carter’s Park will remain closed until the Department of Emergency Services can ensure the fuel is no longer contaminating the waterway.
Environmental crews, alongside the Virginia DEQ, and Wythe County are continuing to monitor the creek and preform cleanups as necessary.
Check points for cleanup were placed throughout the creek from East Lee Highway at Carter’s Park to Major Grahams Road.
