Carilion Clinic helps to save the lives of many in our community.
Recently, they have hit a milestone in the heart department.
This week, they hit a surgical milestone by treating their 500th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement patient.
That’s when an unhealthy valve in the heart is replaced with one that is artificial.
Doctors say this is a minimally invasive surgery compared to open heart surgery and the recovery time is faster.
“It’s really remarkable to see the fact that their breathing problems have resolved. As soon as they get up and walk they realize wow they really were short of breath and that shortness of breath is relieved,” said Jason Foerst, Director of the Structural Heart and Valve Center at Carilion Clinic.
Carilion Clinic is one of the first in the region to do this many procedures.
