Overnight accommodations for RV, Yurt, and cabin campgrounds are now available at Explore Park in Roanoke County.

“We’re excited,” said Scott Ramsburg of Roanoke County Parks and Recreation.

“It’s been a number of years coming, but we believe Explore Park is on a great trajectory to be an outdoor recreation center that serves both the interests of locals and tourists to our region.”

Four new hand-built cabins are now available along with four new Yurts and a bathhouse. The new cabins and yurts are hand-built by a local business, Don’s Cab-Inns.

The cabins include a queen-sized bed, rope ladder leading to a loft, and provide a rustic experience for those that use it. It also includes heating and air conditioning.

The yurts sleep up to six people and include a private bathroom. These do not come with heat.

Ramsburg says the new addition for Explore Park will provide tourists and locals a unique outdoor opportunity.

“The great part about Explore park – it feels like you’re out here in the wilderness but it’s not that far from home,” said Ramsburg.

“It’s only a 15-minute drive and you’re in downtown Roanoke for all the access to the shopping and dining here.”

Once the development is fully built out Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Director Doug Blount explained there will be 13 cabins and 5 yurts.

The project to construct the bathhouse and the infrastructure to support the cabins was right at $800,000.

Blount said where the yurts and cabins are located was a parking site before, they chose the site because they wouldn’t have to cut down any trees or disturb nature.

“It took very little earthwork to build the complex. It fit well with what our vendor wanted and what we were trying to accommodate with a development where we could put a bathhouse but also have extra parking and open green space,” said Blount.
