Area doctors seek alternatives for opioid use

Local News

In the health care world, doctors are trying to come up with different solutions rather than taking the opioids.

Doctors say there are healthy alternatives to taking the drugs including as simple as an ice pack, to physical therapy, to opioid free treatments.

Less than year ago, the CDC issued recommendations saying doctors should consider non-opioid options before they prescribe the drug.

They say even though sometimes the medication is necessary, you really need a doctor who will explain your options and educate you on the risks of opioids.

“I mean I want someone to sit down with me, give me my options. Tell me how long it’s going to take, how much it’s going to cost, how effective is it. If I do this one, is it the best option for me,” said Dr. Ray Tuck, Virginia Board of Medicine.

A doctor on the Virginia Board of Medicine says they have been working very hard with the Virginia law makers to stop this epidemic.
