AMHERST Va. (WFXR) — The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office reports a man has been arrested after allegedly passing counterfeit bills in 28 counties along the East Coast.

According to the sheriff, Malcolm Jamal McKinney’s alleged use of counterfeit bills totaled a loss of $63,162 worth of merchandise since November of 2022.

On March 27th, deputies responded to the Madison Heights Walmart after complaints of an unknown man, who would later be identified as McKinney, passing suspected counterfeit bills. Amherst County deputies and Walmart Asset Protection worked together and identified the suspect as McKinney.

McKinney has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • Ten counts of Uttering False Bills (Class 4 Felony)
  • One count of Obtaining Merchandise Under False Pretense (Class U Felony)
  • One count of Obtaining Money Under False Pretense (Misdemeanor)
