UPDATE 10:10 p.m.: Alleghany County Public Schools has released a statement after a physical education teacher was arrested on 31 charges of taking indecent liberties with a child.

That statement reads:

On January 18, 2022, a staff member of the Alleghany County Public Schools was arrested and charged with 31 felonies related to alleged sexual contact involving minors. The school division placed the staff member on administrative leave approximately one year ago on Jan. 21, 2021, when the division was made aware of allegations against the individual.

This individual is not allowed on school property. Because this is a personnel matter, there is little else we can share at this time.

The Virginia Department of State Police is handling the criminal investigation. All questions pertaining to the investigation should be directed to the State Police or the Alleghany County Commonwealth’s Attorney.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A physical education (PE) teacher in Alleghany County has been arrested on 31 charges of taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship.

Gavin Haynes was taken into custody on Tuesday morning on multiple charges obtained from an Alleghany Grand Jury.

Haynes is listed as a Ninth Grade Physical Education teacher at Alleghany High School. He is also listed as a Sports Exercise and Health Science, Advanced PE and Weightlifting.

The charges date back to June of 2010.

Haynes is a popular fixture in high school baseball in the Alleghany Highlands being a former player and assistant coach for the Alleghany Mountaineers baseball team.

The Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is working the case. They say they have no additional comments to be made in reference to this case at this time.

Haynes is currently being held at the Alleghany Regional Jail without bond.
