State Board for Virginia Community Colleges will vote on the name in November

CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (WFXR) — Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC) may soon be known under a new name.

The Local Board for DSLCC accepted the recommendation for Mountain Gateway Community College to replace the community college’s name. President of DSLCC, Dr. John Rainone, reviewed three names from the task force out of a pool of over 430 names.

The task force reviewed dozens of names and came up with a final list to present before the Local Board. The final list of names represented a sense of pride and innovative learning and collaboration.

The new name, Mountain Gateway, will still need to be voted on by the State Board for Virginia Community Colleges in November. If approved the college will transition to the new name on July 1, 2022.

“I appreciate the task force’s due diligence and hours spent out of their personal lives to present their recommendations for the college’s name change,” said DSLCC Local Board Chair Ramona Garcia, who represents Bath County. “Thanks to their efforts, we are pleased to launch the new name.”

The DSLCC name will remain through the rest of the academic year, after which rebranding will begin.
