ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — LewisGale Hospital Alleghany is one of nine hospitals in the Commonwealth to be awarded a five-star Overall Hospital Quality Rating.

LewisGale Regional Health System announced on Wednesday, Aug. 3, that the rating came from the Centers for Medicare and & Medicaid Services (CMS), adding that LewisGale Hospital Alleghany is one of only nine in the Commonwealth to receive top honors. A total of 429 hospitals throughout the U.S. received top honors.

“Nationally, not many hospitals can tout the same performance and demonstrated outcomes. This is a testament to our colleagues’ dedication to patient-focused care, and I want the community to know these are important distinctions that we work hard to achieve,” the CEO of LewisGale Hospital Alleghany, Lee Higginbotham, said.

Over 100 measures are included in the overall star rating, according to the CMS. The rating system is produced to help patients find the best quality care.

Health officials say the star rating measures are divided into the following categories:

  • Mortality
  • Safety of care
  • Readmission
  • Patient experience
  • Timely and effective care
