ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A former physical education (PE) teacher at an Alleghany County high school pleaded guilty on Monday to eight counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
According to officials, Gavin Haynes was taken into custody on Jan. 18 and charged with 31 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship.
Alleghany County court records say those charges stem back to incidents that reportedly took place between June 2010 and August 2016.
When he was arrested nearly seven months ago, Haynes was listed as a ninth grade PE teacher at Alleghany High School, but as of this writing, his name is no longer included on the school’s faculty list.
Alleghany County Public Schools told WFXR News that a staff member was taken into custody on Jan. 18 for felony charges involving sexual contact with minors, but said that person had been placed on administrative leave the year before — more specifically, on Jan. 21, 2021 — when the division learned about allegations against the staff member.
On Monday, Aug. 15, Haynes pleaded guilty to eight of the child indecency charges while the other 23 were dismissed, according to Alleghany Circuit Court.
Haynes’ sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 22, officials say.
