UPDATE 3:36 p.m. (9/7/21): With dozens of students and staff members at Craig County Public Schools under quarantine due to potential coronavirus exposure, the district has decided to suspend in-person learning for the rest of the week because of a staff shortage.
After collaborating with the local health department, Craig County school officials decided to pause face-to-face instruction from Wednesday, Sept. 8 through Friday, Sept. 10.
The district already closed schools on Tuesday, Sept. 7 in order to allow administrative staff to conduct contact tracing due to coronavirus exposures among students and staff that occurred over the Labor Day weekend.
As of Tuesday, the school district say three students and two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 while 50 students and 16 staff members are currently quarantined, either because they are a close contact or they are caring for a child who is a close contact.
School officials say they will still transport students to and from Botetourt Technical Education Center, but parents will be responsible for transportation to Craig County High School.
Parents and students should expect to hear from school employees about their assignments during this period.
Meanwhile, even during amid this pause on in-person instruction, Craig County Public Schools says athletic practices and events will continue. However, masks are still required at indoor events, no exceptions.
UPDATE 10:34 a.m. (9/7/21): Craig County school officials announced on Tuesday the reason behind the school district’s closure for the day. That reason is related to the coronavirus.
According to Craig County Public Schools, the decision to close for Tuesday, Sept. 7 was made to allow administration to conduct contact tracing following student and staff COVID-19 exposures over the weekend.
