ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Inmate Work Crew at the Alleghany Regional Jail picked up 8,060 pounds of trash and 118 tires over an eight-mile stretch of Dolly Ann Drive.

The crew also found washing machines, couches, chairs, mattresses, lawnmowers, and various other items. The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office says they logged 268 hours during operation.

The sheriff’s office would like to remind county residents that there are two places to dispose of trash. Individuals can take their trash to the Valley Ridge Transfer Station. Covington City residents can use Peter’s Mountain Landfill.

Under Virginia State Code section 33.2.802, dumping trash:

“Any person convicted of a violation of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by confinement in jail for not more than 12 months and a fine of not less than $250 or more than $2,500, either or both. In lieu of the imposition of confinement in jail, the court may order the defendant to perform a mandatory minimum of 10 hours of community service in litter abatement activities.”
