Alleghany County man arrested after standoff with law enforcement

An Alleghany County man, was arrested on Sunday after a standoff with law enforcement at Moomaw Lake.

According to the Alleghany Sheriff’s Office, Ricky Chittum was spotted just before 11am, walking around walking around Moomaw Lake strapped with an assault rifle.

In a Facebook video posted to Chittum’s account on Saturday, Chittum claims God called on him to be the general of an army he referred to as “ACE” which stands for “Appalachian Christian Elite.” In the video, Chittum says “God anointed me, I think it was June 7th, and told me to gather my community.” He asks people to meet him at Kelly’s Pier with their gear, faith, and weapons. “There was a gentleman up here at the Gathright Dam,” said Lieutenant Matthew Bowser. “They were saying he was wearing body armour and was carrying around an assault rifle.” An assault rifle believed to be an AR-15.

Several law enforcement agencies negotiated with Chittum for hours asking him to put down his gun. Chittum surrendered and was taken into custody just after 2pm. According to Bowser, Chittum was the only suspect. “He had made several statements,” said Bowser. “Anti-terrorism. He was protecting the dam from terrorists and he was making quite a few religious statements.”

Chittum was taken Alleghany Regional Jail and underwent a psychological evaluation. Chittum is charged with brandishing a weapon and assaulting a police officer.
