A 24-year-old man was shot and killed shortly after the new year began in Martinsville.
According to Martinsville PD, the shooting happened around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 300 block of Clift Street. Police say a New Year’s Eve party was taking place at the residence.
Police have identified the man as Rasheem Oshea Hairston who is from Eden, North Carolina.
“It’s sad. Anytime there’s a life lost, I don’t care what color, what nationality, what religion, I think it’s a shame,” says neighborhood resident Laura Moore.
“I would have thought maybe it was a shot. Being New Year’s Eve, I thought it was firecrackers. But in all honesty, I didn’t hear it,” says Moore.
Another individual, Devontae Lee Massey, was also hurt in the shooting. Police obtained arrest warrants for Massey. Massey is charged with the following charges:
- Second-degree murder
- Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
- Reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm in the city
Police say Massey and Hairston knew each other and the case remains under investigation.
