LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) —Liberty University has named its interim head football coach to replace the departing Hugh Freeze.

LU Athletic Director Ian McCaw announced Tuesday that Josh Aldridge will lead the Flames until a permanent coach is named.

McCaw says he has a short list of candidates for the permanent job.  He hopes to announce the new head coach as early as next week.

Aldridge is the current Co-Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Liberty.

The Flames are bowl-eligible, and Aldridge will likely coach the Flames in that game.

Liberty is one of just five FBS teams to win a bowl game in the last three seasons.

He joined Freeze’s staff at LU in January 2019.

Before that Aldridge was a defensive coach at Lenoir-Rhyne and West Georgia.

Auburn University announced Monday that it had hired Freeze to coach its football team.
