LATEST: Suspect in officer-involved shooting identified


WELCH, WV (WVNS) — 2 p.m. May 3, 2019 UPDATE: New details were released regarding an officer-involved shooting which happened on Sunday, April 28.  Troopers were called to the Stop Abusive Family Environments (SAFE) facility near Welch just after 9 p.m. 

When they arrived, they found Shawna Widemann, 49, of Welch banging on the door with a claw hammer.  According to a release, troopers told Widemann to put down the weapon.  That is when they say she lunged at them in a threatening manner.  Both troopers fired their weapons in response.  The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

The case is still under investigation.  The troopers involved are on critical incident leave.

ORIGINAL STORY: State Troopers in McDowell County were involved in a shooting which happened in Welch on Sunday, April 28, 2019.  It happened at around 9:10 p.m. 

According to a statement from the West Virginia State Police, a female suspect was prounounced dead at the scene.  There is no word on what led to the incident.

Two troopers were placed on critical incident leave as a result of the shooting. The case is still under investigation.  This is a developing story, 59News will bring you more details as they become available.
