BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia Tech is seeing its largest freshman class to ever attend the university and town officials in Blacksburg are concerned the high amount of students could strain the town.
According to official census numbers, 7,604 freshmen enrolled in fall classes.
That number breaks the previous record of 6,836 from 2017.
Blacksburg Mayor Leslie Hager-Smith is concerned that the 768 additional students, from the freshman class alone, will put a strain on the area.
Virginia Tech tried to off-set the surge by offering to pay some students to delay attendance as well as by housing some students in a nearby Holiday Inn.
