Inmate found dead in Roanoke City jail

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – An inmate behind bars for Trespassing and Disobeying a Court Order was found dead in his cell.

Around 7:00 p.m Thursday, security within the Roanoke City jail was conducting routine security rounds when a deputy noticed Aaron Michael Wheaton hanging in his cell.

Deputies and medical staff attempted to revive Wheaton, but attempts failed and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Both the Roanoke City Police and the Roanoke Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the incident.

It is the latest in a string of deaths that have taken place inside the jail. Multiple lawsuits allege wrongful deaths at the Roanoke City Jail and there has been concern expressed previously about jail conditions.
