ROANOKE, VA – The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office has reported that an inmate has been killed during an incident that occurred at the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center on the morning of February 14th.

According to the Sheriff, around 6:45 am on Tuesday, during a security round, Deputies found 35-year-old resident Wayne D. Harper of Roanoke with blood on his person. Staff and medical personnel were called in and Harper was immediately removed and placed in restrictive housing.

A second resident was then found unresponsive in the cell. Roanoke Fire-EMS was called on-site as medical personnel began life-saving procedures. Roanoke Fire-EMS continued life-saving efforts, but the resident was pronounced deceased at 7:33 A.M.

The resident’s identity will not be released until all next of kin have been notified.

The Roanoke Police Department has been notified and has assumed the role of lead agency in the investigation.

Wayne D. Harper of Roanoke has been charged with Second Degree Murder.  regarding this offense. No further details can be released at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
