(WFXR) — September marks National Cholesterol Education Month. According to the CDC, approximately 102 million Americans age 20 and older suffer from high cholesterol.
High cholesterol is one of the most commonly misunderstood health risks in America due to its lack of symptoms, which makes it hard to diagnose.
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in the body and many foods. Your body needs cholesterol to function, but too much can cause build up in your arteries, which could narrow arteries after a while, thus putting you at risk for heart disease and stroke.
Experts recommend that adults 20 and older should have their cholesterol checked every five years.
In addition, it’s not uncommon for children to have high cholesterol, which means it’s important for parents to talk to their children’s doctor.
However, there are some easy steps to stay on the healthy track.
Health experts suggest establishing a regular exercise routine at least 30 minutes a day, staying on a low fat and high fiber diet, quitting smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, and keeping your stress levels low.
Everybody is different, though, so it’s important to talk to your doctors if any questions arise.
