How to maintain a healthy brain during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month


(WFXR) — June serves as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a designation created by the Alzheimer’s Association in 2014 to raise awareness for the disease.

The association uses this month to remind people about the importance of brain health and how many people are fighting Alzheimer’s.

According to the group, maintaining an active lifestyle while you are young can keep your brain healthier in the long run.

“It’s really important we start taking care of ourselves earlier in life,” said Jeanne Snyder, the Community Executive for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Central and Western Virginia Chapter. “Sleep is very important, diet and exercise, and those are all things that we can do early in life.”

In addition, health officials say chronic stress can lead to memory issues, so here are a few steps to maintain a healthy brain.

  • Manage your diet and exercise so you can be the best version of yourself.
  • Unplug your phone and limit your screen time.
  • Control the stress before it controls you because repeated stress can affect memory, moods, and anxiety.
