WATCH: Dr. Bissell shares COVID update for New River Health District after VDH’s total case count surpasses 1 million

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The director of the New River Health District, Dr. Noelle Bissell, addressed community members about the current COVID-19 response and local vaccination efforts after the Commonwealth’s total number of coronavirus cases surpassed one million on Monday.

This remote news conference comes after the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 9,473 new COVID-19 cases, 36 new virus-related hospitalizations, and 89 new virus-related deaths around the Commonwealth between Thursday, Dec. 9 and Monday, Dec. 13.

Of those numbers, the VDH says 209 new COVID-19 cases, seven new hospitalizations, and three new deaths are from the following localities within the New River Health District:

  • Floyd County: 29 new cases and three new hospitalizations
  • Giles County: 27 new cases and one new hospitalization
  • Montgomery County: 89 new cases and two new hospitalizations
  • Pulaski County: 46 new cases and three new deaths
  • Radford: 18 new cases and one new hospitalization

The health district’s vaccine clinics not only offer free COVID-19 vaccinations and testing, but also free flu vaccines from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
